Characteristics of Mental Retardation Children

Mental Retardation (Mental Retardation / Mentally Retarded) means mentally retarded. Mental retardation is often akin to the terms, as follows: Feeble-minded, Mentally Retarded, Idiot, Moron, Totally Dependent, Mental Disability, Intellectual Disorders.

Characteristics of mentally retarded children by Brown et al, 1991; Wolery & Haring, 1994 on Exceptional Children, fifth edition, p.485-486, 1996 states:

  1. Slow in learning new things, have difficulty in learning abstract knowledge or related, and always quick to forget what he learned without constant practice.
  2. The difficulty in generalizing and learning new things.
  3. Oratorical ability is less severe for mentally retarded children.
  4. Physical defects and the development of the motion. Most children have severe mental retardation premises limitations in physical movement, there are not able to walk, unable to stand or get up without assistance. They are slow in doing the tasks that are very simple, it is difficult to reach something, and looked up.
  5. Lacking in self-help skills. Most of the severe mentally retarded children is very difficult to take care of themselves, such as: dressing, eating, and taking care of personal hygiene. They always require special training to learn the basic skills.
  6. Behavior and interactions that are not common. Mild mentally retarded children can play together with regular kids, but children who have severe mental retardation did not do so. It may be caused difficulties for mentally retarded children in giving attention to the opponent to play.
  7. Less reasonable behavior continued. Many children with severe mental retardation to behave without a clear purpose. Their activities such as rituals, such as twirling a finger in his face and doing things that harm ourselves, such as: biting self, hitting the head, etc.
